10 Life Lessons Every Business-Oriented Black Woman Should Know: Trusting Your Intuition, Standing Up for Yourself, and More

Updated: Jul 1

Life is a journey, and along the way, we pick up invaluable lessons that shape who we are. As a business-oriented Black woman with a love for beauty products, faith, and honest insights, I've had my fair share of experiences that have taught me so much. Here are ten things I wish I had known sooner. I hope they resonate with you and perhaps give you a little guidance on your own path.

10. You Have More Support Than You Think

In the age of social media, it’s easy to equate followers to traction. But here's the thing: not everyone who supports you will be vocal about it. There are countless lurkers who are silently cheering you on. They see your growth, even if they don’t always comment or like your posts. Keep going; you have more support than you realize.

9. The Final Decision Lies With You

For a long time, I deferred many life decisions to those I thought were wiser or more experienced. But the truth is, you are more capable than you know. While advice is valuable, the ultimate decision is yours to make. Own your choices and trust in your ability to navigate your path. Most of the time, it’s none of their business anyway.

8. How to Read Sarcasm and Dishonesty

Growing up as a genuine person, I assumed everyone else was too. It wasn’t until later that I realized people can be insincere. Learning to read sarcasm and dishonesty has been crucial in protecting myself and making better decisions about who to trust. It’s a skill worth honing, as it can save you a lot of heartache.

7. How to Stand Up for Myself

Respecting your elders and keeping quiet were values instilled in me from a young age. While respect is important, it should never come at the cost of your self-respect. Learning to stand up for myself has been a powerful tool in navigating both personal and professional relationships. Don’t be afraid to speak up when necessary. 6. How My Blackness Affects My Standing and Societal Expectations in White America

Understanding how my blackness intersects with societal expectations has been a crucial part of my journey. It’s a complex, often challenging reality to navigate. Embracing this part of my identity has empowered me to face societal biases head-on and advocate for myself and others in meaningful ways.

5. How to Write a Proper Email

It’s almost embarrassing to admit, but I didn’t feel confident writing a proper email until after grad school. Clear, concise communication is key in the business world. Taking the time to learn and practice professional writing has boosted my confidence and improved my interactions significantly.

4. People Will Judge What They Don't Understand

It’s between you and God; you never need to explain yourself to people who are committed to misunderstanding you. Judgment often stems from ignorance or insecurity. Remember, their opinions don’t define you. Stay true to yourself and your journey, knowing that you don’t owe anyone an explanation.

3. It's Okay to Do Nothing

In our fast-paced world, we often feel guilty for taking breaks. But it’s essential to slow down and even stop for a while. Your work will always be there, but your health and well-being should come first. You are only one person, and it’s okay to take time for yourself to recharge and reflect.

2. How People Treat You Is a Reflection of Themselves

One of the most freeing realizations has been understanding that how people treat you is more about them than it is about you. Their actions reflect their own insecurities, fears, and struggles. Don’t internalize their behavior; instead, focus on your own growth and how you choose to respond.

1. Your Intuition Is Never Wrong

Trust your gut. Your intuition is a powerful guide that is rarely wrong. Over time, I’ve learned to listen to that inner voice, which has steered me away from potential pitfalls and toward opportunities that align with my true self. Cultivate that trust and let it lead you to where you’re meant to be.

Embracing These Lessons

Balancing professional aspirations with personal growth can be challenging for women in any industry. Embracing these lessons has not only shaped my career but also enriched my life. Whether you're navigating corporate corridors, entertainment, running your own business, or exploring new ventures, I hope these insights offer you the clarity and courage to forge your own path with confidence and grace.

Remember, life is a continuous learning process. Keep growing, keep believing in yourself, and most importantly, keep moving forward.

Love,
